Head-On Crash on I-10 in Louisiana Claims Life of Texas Driver After Truck Jumped the Median

Louisiana – Louisiana State Police reported on November 5, 2022, that on November 4, 2022, soon after 6:45 p.m., Troopers from LSP Troop D responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on Interstate 10 near the Lacassine exit (LA Hwy 101) in Jefferson Davis Parish. Gay Dale Ferguson, 61, of Orange, Texas, was killed in the crash.

According to the preliminary investigation, a 2011 Ford F150 pickup truck driven by 28-year-old Caleb Lee Bowers of Jennings, Louisiana was going east on I-10. Bowers lost control of the vehicle for unclear reasons and drove off the left side of the road. After exiting the highway, the F150 drove into the median and vaulted over the cable barriers before entering the westbound lanes. At the same time, Ferguson was driving a 2018 Ford Edge SUV west on I-10 when it was hit head-on by the F150.

Ferguson died as a result of injuries sustained in the incident and was pronounced dead at the scene. The 3-year-old toddler in the SUV had serious injuries and was sent to a hospital in the Lake Charles region for treatment. Bowers was sent to a nearby hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Toxicology samples were collected and submitted for testing. This crash is still being investigated.

While the exact reason for this incident is still being investigated, Louisiana State Police said that inattentive/distracted driving remains a significant cause of fatal crashes in our state. More information about distracted driving is available at www.distraction.gov.

So far in 2022, Troop D has investigated 24 fatal crashes that resulted in 26 deaths.
