Hazardous Winter Weather Conditions in Louisiana Causes Accidents, Closures

A winter weather system moving through the south and the rest of the nation is causing hazardous conditions on Louisiana roadways. Below are some of the road closures throughout the state of Louisiana caused by the winter storm.

With the rise of temperatures above freezing and the work of LADOTD, travel conditions have improved. However, there is still the potential for black ice again tonight as much of Louisiana will see freezing temperatures later this evening and into tonight.

Louisiana State Police Troop D (Southwest LA) Traffic Advisory

It is still being reported that several roadways in Beauregard Parish and in Allen Parish have been deemed impassable due to the icy road conditions. Travel in Beauregard Parish and in Allen Parish should be avoided until roadway conditions improve.
 
State Police would like to remind motorists to be careful if they choose to drive and please be aware of icy patches that may still be present on the roadway.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists that LA 26 between the Beauregard/Allen Parish line and US 165 in Allen Parish is deemed impassable effective immediately due to winter weather.

Louisiana State Police Troop I Traffic Advisory

The US 90 bridges in the St. Mary area are being closed due to ice forming on overpass. The closure involves LA 83 (Baldwin), LA 3211 (Franklin), LA 3215(Garden City), and LA 317(Centerville). Traffic can exit and re-enter past the overpass.
Call volume due to traffic incidents has increased in the St. Landry, Evangeline, and Acadia Parish areas since 4:30 a.m. today. With current weather conditions beginning to deteriorate due to a wintery mix of rain moving in, all bridges are subject to freezing over. Please drive with extreme caution and avoid travel if you can.

LA 394 between LA 171 W and LA 113 in Beauregard Parish is CLOSED effective immediately due to winter weather conditions.

UPDATE: As of 2:30 pm, lanes in both directions on I-10 near the Louisiana / Texas state line are now open.
I-10 intermittent lane closures in both directions between milepost 4.0 and the Louisiana / Texas State Line due to ice on the roadway.

Louisiana DOTD Advisory for East Baton Rouge Parish

DOTD advises motorists that all state-maintained roadways in East Baton Rouge Parish have been deemed unsafe due to the ever-changing winter weather conditions. Motorists traveling on I-10 WB are being diverted onto I-12 EB at the I-10/ I-12 split to U.S. 61 south. Crews are working diligently to salt and keep open the U.S. 190 Bridge (Huey P. Long), which is a priority route. Due to dangerous conditions, DOTD advises that only emergency vehicles and personnel utilize these bridges.

Louisiana DOTD Issues Advisory, Roads in Northwest Region Deemed Impassable Due to Winter Weather

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists that all state-maintained roadways with the exception of I-20 and I-49 (sections that remain open) in the 7-parish Northwest region have been deemed impassable due to winter weather conditions. There has been significant accumulation of snow and ice on bridges, overpasses, and roadways resulting in travel conditions that are considered to be inadvisable. With additional winter precipitation expected to impact the region over the next few days, DOTD is strongly urging motorists to avoid ALL unnecessary travel, including on interstates that remain open.

Louisiana State Police Interstate 10 Traffic Advisory (Southeast LA)

I-10 westbound at LA Hwy 415 and I-10 eastbound at I-49 is currently closed due to deteriorating roadway conditions and multiple vehicle crashes. Westbound traffic is being diverted to LA Hwy 415 northbound to US Hwy 190 westbound. Eastbound traffic is being diverted to I-49 northbound to US Hwy 190 eastbound.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, (DOTD), advises the public that all entry and exit ramps onto I-49 between Exit 80 and Exit 94 are closed. In addition, the urban elevated sections of I-49 in Alexandria, from Exit 80-MacArthur Drive (Jct. US 71/167) to Exit 94-Rapides Station ARE NOW CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC.

Interstate 20 from Millhaven (milepost 124) to Rayville (milepost 138) both east and westbound have significant ice accumulation over the roadway, causing several crashes. A State Police unit was sideswiped this morning by a vehicle that slid off the roadway. Please slow down and be aware of hazardous road conditions. Interstate 20 is still open at this time, use extreme caution if you must travel.

Louisiana State Police urges all motorists to obey all roadway signs. It is illegal and potentially dangerous to drive around “road closed” barricades at any time for any reason. These closures are executed to prevent crashes and to prevent motorists from becoming stranded.
