Hazardous Materials Release Causes Closure of Edgerly Road

On June 23, 2021, at approximately 10:15 PM Ward Six Fire Department announced that Edgerly Road between Pine Forest Road and Bud Bennett Road is closed to all traffic due to a hazardous material release at an oil well site in the area.

June 25, 2021, 7:30 pm – Louisiana State Police HazMat Division has reported that Edgerly Road is now open and all evacuees have been allowed to return home.

June 25, 2021, 3:25 pm – Ward 6 Fire Department has indicated that operations at the hazmat incident on Edgerly Road will cease at 6:00 pm June 25, 2021.
The well response company is still in the process of installing blowout preventers on the site, therefore the road will remain closed and evacuations are still in place until they complete their work. Ward 6 says that their fire suppression teams will no longer be needed and they will be returning to normal operations.

June 24, 2021, 10:00 pm – Edgerly Road is still closed until further notice. Firefighters will remain on scene until the oil well leak is safely capped.

June 24, 2021, 5:00 am – From Ward 6 Fire – Ward 6 Fire was dispatched to a reported gas leak at a well site in the 4800 blk of Edgerly Rd at 5:27pm. Upon arrival, it was discovered that there was a failure on the wellhead, and high-pressure natural gas, salt water, and oil distillate was being discharged.
An immediate isolation distance of 330 ft. in all directions was established while the notification process was completed. At approximately 7:30 pm changes in weather conditions required a larger isolation distance and 3 residential structures were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

June 23, 2021, 10:15 pm – Edgerly Road is currently closed between Bud Bennett Rd and Pine Forest Rd. until further notice.

Contract crews are scheduled to arrive this morning to evaluate the best methods to control the release.
Agencies assisting Ward 6 Fire include Houston River FD, DeQuincy FD, Beauregard FD 2, LSP Emergency Services Unit, and DEQ.
