Governor Edwards’ Emergency Powers to be Put on Hold for 7 Days After Republicans Endorse Petition

Governor Edwards’ Emergency Powers to be Put on Hold for 7 Days After Republicans Endorse Petition

Published October 23, 2020

The combined efforts of Louisiana Republican House members supported a recent petition to put an end to the emergency powers of Governor Edwards.

Upon receiving the petition, the Governor must revoke his emergency orders. The petition puts a 7-day hold on some emergency actions related to CODIV-19. Republican House members said, “We hope the Governor follows the law and finally begins cooperating with the Legislature.”

The House of Representatives’ petition has the endorsement and support of the Republican House Delegation. Among House leaders, Speaker Clay Schexnayder, Speaker Pro Tempore Tanner Magee, and House Republican Delegation Chairman Blake Miguez have signed on the petition.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards questioned the constitutionality of the petition and indicated that he is following the COVID-19 guidelines put in place by the White House and revoking the emergency orders could put federal funding at risk.

The governor can choose not to follow the petition, which will leave it up to the courts to decide what happens next.
