On July 4, 2020, at 11:44 PM CT, the moon will reach its full phase of the “Buck Moon”, also known as a “Hay Moon”, or “Thunder Moon.” Just prior to the full moon, at approximately 11:30 PM we will also experience a penumbral lunar eclipse. A penumbral lunar eclipse happens when the Earth blocks some of the Sun’s light from reaching the Moon causing a slight dimming effect.

Buck Moon – It’s called a “Buck Moon” because this is the time of year when male deer, also known as bucks, begin to grow antlers.

Hay Moon – The term “Hay Moon” comes from the time farmers begin working to put hay in their barns.

Thunder Moon – “Thunder Moon” comes from the frequent thunderstorms that happen during this time of the year.
