The investigation into a deadly two-vehicle collision on I-20 near the Cheniere Drew Exit was started by the Louisiana State Police Troop F just after 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 26, 2023. The incident resulted in the tragically lost lives of Selden W. Heatley II, aged 60, and Selden J. Heatley, aged 76.

An initial investigation identified the vehicle involved in the incident as a 2011 Hurricane Recreational Vehicle (RV), driven by Selden W. Heatley II, traveling west on Interstate 20 in the left lane. Simultaneously, a 2020 Nissan Altima was also moving westward on the same highway, but in the right lane.

For yet undiscovered reasons, the RV veered off the road to the left. The driver tried to correct the path by steering right but overcompensated, hitting the Nissan. Following the collision, the RV ran off the right side of the road, hit a tree, and immediately burst into flames.

The individuals identified as Selden W. Heatley II and Selden J. Heatley succumbed to their injuries at the crash scene. It is unclear whether they were wearing seatbelts.

The Nissan's driver, who had appropriately fastened their seatbelt, did not suffer any injuries.

Despite no immediate suspicion of substance abuse, standard toxicology samples were gathered for analysis. The accident is still under review.

LSP indicated that as they continue to probe into the reason behind this crash, they urge drivers to prioritize safety on the roadways. Definitely avoid engaging in distractions or driving under the influence, since they present significant risks not only to you but also to others on the road. Maintain focus, stay vigilant, and act responsibly every time you take the roadway. Your dedication to maintaining safety on the roads plays a vital role in ensuring everyone in our community's welfare.

In 2023, 29 fatal accidents have been probed by Troop F, leading to a total of 35 fatalities.
