Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police Troop D responded to a collision involving two vehicles at the intersection of US Hwy 90 and Scheufens Road just east of Lake Charles, in Calcasieu Parish on the evening of December 5, 2023, at around 7:30 pm. Unfortunately, the crash resulted in the death of 56-year-old Larry Lee Carter Jr. from Iowa, Louisiana.

The initial findings indicate that a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta, driven by 40-year-old Juan Carlos Maciel from Austin, Texas, was heading east on US 90 while a 1999 GMC pickup truck driven by Carter was traveling west on US 90. According to reports from Louisiana State Police, as they approached the intersection, Maciel attempted to make a left turn onto Scheufens Road without yielding to the westbound GMC and collided head-on with it.

Carter was unrestrained at the time and the impact caused him to be thrown from his vehicle and he tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Maciel sustained minor injuries and was taken to a hospital in the Lake Charles area for treatment while a passenger in the GMC was properly restrained and also suffered minor injuries.

The authorities have collected toxicology samples from both drivers for analysis as part of their ongoing investigation into this incident.
