Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana – On November 27, 2023, just after 3:00 p.m., Louisiana State Police Troop D arrived at the scene of a fatal three-vehicle collision on Interstate 10 near LA Hwy 397 in Calcasieu Parish. Sadly, the crash resulted in the loss of Garrett Wayne Smith, a 27-year-old resident of Sulphur, Louisiana.
According to the initial investigation, Smith was driving a 2013 Chevrolet Silverado eastbound on I-10 when it veered off the right side of the road and collided with the rear of a parked flatbed trailer attached to a 2019 Volvo (18-wheeler). After this impact, Smith’s vehicle re-entered the eastbound lanes and was struck by a 2022 Volvo (18-wheeler) traveling in the same direction.
Regrettably, Smith sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. It is currently unknown whether he was wearing a seat belt due to extensive damage to his vehicle. The other two drivers involved were unharmed. Toxicology samples were taken from all three drivers for analysis, and an investigation into this tragic incident is ongoing.
In 2023 alone, Troop D has investigated 32 fatal crashes leading to 35 deaths.
