Rapides Parish, Louisiana - On November 2, 2023, at around 10:50 a.m., Troop E of the Louisiana State Police responded to an unfortunate single-vehicle crash on I-49 near Mile Post 78. Tragically, Tandy McElwee Jr., a 76-year-old resident of Shreveport, Louisiana lost his life.

The preliminary investigation indicates that McElwee was driving a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee northbound on I-49. However, for reasons still being examined, his vehicle veered off the road and collided with the cable barrier in the median. Despite being properly restrained, McElwee suffered severe injuries and was rushed to a local hospital where he eventually succumbed to his injuries.

As part of standard procedure, samples for toxicology analysis were collected and submitted. This crash remains an active investigation.

LSP indicated that it is important to be aware that distracted and inattentive driving continues to be a major factor contributing to accidents in our state. Louisiana State Police strongly urges all drivers to remain vigilant behind the wheel as even a momentary lapse in attention can have fatal consequences.

To date in 2023, Troop E has handled a total of 45 fatal crashes resulting in the loss of 50 lives.
