Charlotte, Louisiana – A tragic crash on Louisiana Highway 14 has claimed the life of 36-year-old Avery Foreman of Youngsville, Louisiana. The incident occurred on June 15, 2024, when a 2002 Ford F-250 struck Foreman, who was riding his bicycle in the right westbound lane.

According to the preliminary investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop I, Foreman was not wearing a helmet and his bicycle lacked essential safety features, including lights and reflectors. The driver of the Ford F-250, who was properly restrained, sustained no injuries in the crash.

Foreman was transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his severe injuries on June 25, 2024. The driver of the Ford F-250 voluntarily provided a breath sample, which showed no alcohol detected. A toxicology sample was also collected from Foreman and submitted for analysis.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety measures for bicyclists. Louisiana state law (LRS 32:329.1) requires bicycles to be equipped with specific lighting and reflectors to enhance visibility and promote safety when riding at night or in low-light conditions. According to the law, bicycles must have a white light in the front and a red light in the rear, both visible from at least 500 feet away. Additionally, a rear reflector must be visible from 100 feet away, and side-mounted reflectors must be visible from 100 to 600 feet.

This fatal crash is part of a concerning trend, as Troop I has investigated 18 fatal crashes resulting in 19 fatalities in 2024 alone. The incident remains under investigation, and authorities are urging bicyclists to take necessary precautions to ensure their safety on the roads.

By adhering to safety guidelines and regulations, bicyclists can significantly reduce their risk of being involved in a fatal crash. As the summer months approach, it is crucial for cyclists to prioritize their safety and take steps to increase their visibility on the roads.
