Lake Charles, LA – An Extreme Cold Warning has been issued for the Lake Charles area, effective from 6:00 PM Tuesday until 9:00 AM Wednesday. The National Weather Service forecasts a low temperature of 12 degrees overnight, with dangerous wind chill values ranging from 5°F to 15°F. These conditions create risks for frostbite and hypothermia, particularly for individuals who may have unprotected skin exposed to the frigid air.

Residents are strongly advised to limit outdoor activities during this warning period. For those who must go outside, dressing in layers is essential. Recommended attire includes a warm hat, a face mask to protect against icy winds, and insulated gloves. These precautions are vital to ensure safety in the extreme cold.

Frostbite is a serious condition that occurs when skin and underlying tissues freeze, typically affecting fingers, toes, ears, and the nose. Symptoms include numbness, tingling, and a pale or waxy appearance of the skin. Hypothermia, on the other hand, occurs when the body loses heat faster than it can produce it, leading to dangerously low body temperatures. Symptoms may include shivering, confusion, and extreme fatigue.

As temperatures plummet, local shelters and community organizations are preparing to assist those in need. Residents are encouraged to check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those living alone, to ensure they have adequate heating and are safe from the cold.
