Lettsworth, Louisiana – A devastating two-vehicle crash occurred on LA 1 north of LA 15 in Pointe Coupee Parish on June 23, 2024, resulting in the tragic death of 36-year-old Brittany L. Hughes of Hornbeck, Louisiana.
According to the preliminary investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop A, the crash happened shortly before 7:00 p.m. when a 2009 Ford F-150, traveling southbound on LA 1, crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 2021 Nissan Sentra, driven by Hughes, which was traveling northbound on LA 1. The reason behind the Ford’s actions is still under investigation.
Hughes, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Three unrestrained juvenile passengers in her vehicle suffered moderate injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The driver of the Ford, who was also unrestrained, was ejected from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. He was taken to a local hospital. According to reports from Louisiana State Police, impairment is suspected to have played a role in the crash. Standard toxicology samples will be taken and submitted for analysis.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of not driving while intoxicated, and wearing seatbelts. According to statistics, properly wearing a seatbelt dramatically reduces the chance of severe injury or death in a crash. Louisiana law requires all vehicle occupants, regardless of seating position, to wear their seatbelts at all times.
