Detectives Charge Louisiana Man in Connection to Officer-Involved Shooting in Jeanerette that Left One Officer Dead

Jeanerette, Louisiana – On February 21, 2025, Louisiana State Police detectives announced the arrest of 31-year-old Nyjal Hurst from Jeanerette, Louisiana who has been charged in relation to an officer-involved shooting that occurred on July 25, 2024. The incident resulted in the death of Senior Corporal Segus Jolivette of the Lafayette Police Department and injuries to three other officers.

The shooting incident occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Hubertville Road near Martin Luther King Drive in Jeanerette. The Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division was requested to investigate the event, which involved multiple law enforcement agencies. At the time, the police confirmed that the suspect was apprehended and posed no further danger to the public.

Following an investigation, detectives obtained an arrest warrant for Hurst, who has been in custody at the Iberia Parish Jail since the day of the incident. He now faces multiple serious charges, including:

  • Second degree murder (LA RS 14:30.1)
  • Attempted first-degree murder (10 counts) (LA RS 14:30 / LA RS 14:27)
  • Second degree kidnapping (2 counts) (LA RS 14:44.1)
  • Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (LA RS 14:95.1)
  • Illegal possession of a stolen firearm (LA RS 14:69.1)

As the investigation continues, authorities are working closely with the Iberia Parish District Attorney’s Office to gather additional information.
