DeQuincy, Louisiana - A fatal collision between a train and a passenger vehicle occurred in DeQuincy, Louisiana, early Sunday morning, resulting in one death and the arrest of the driver on multiple charges, including DWI and vehicular homicide. The incident took place at approximately 12:13 a.m. on June 22, 2025, at the railroad crossing on 4th Street near DeQuincy Memorial Hospital.
Emergency crews, including Ward Six Fire Protection District and DeQuincy Volunteer Fire Department, responded to the crash scene following a mutual aid request. The driver, identified as 35-year-old David Wayne Richard of Beaumont, Texas, self-extricated from the vehicle and received medical treatment from Acadian Ambulance. Tragically, 35-year-old Susan Garcia, Richard's wife, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Louisiana State Police investigation revealed Richard was driving under the influence and failed to stop for the approaching train. Richard, who was found to be driving without a valid license, was transported to a hospital before being booked into Calcasieu Correctional Center. He faces charges including:
- Second-offense DWI
- Vehicular homicide
- Failure to obey a train signal
- Possession of alcohol in a motor vehicle
- Driving without a license
The DeQuincy Police Department is leading the investigation with support from Louisiana State Police and the Calcasieu Parish Coroner's Office.
