Lafayette Parish, Louisiana – Louisiana State Police Troop I received a report on April 4, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. of a deadly collision involving two vehicles on Interstate 10 eastbound close to mile marker 94 (located between Duson and Scott). Tragically, the crash resulted in the death of Jude Mae Jefferson, a 65-year-old woman from Houston, Texas.
According to the State Police’s initial findings, a 2016 Freightliner 18-wheeler was traveling east on I-10 and had to slow down because of traffic. Meanwhile, Jefferson was driving a 2022 Chevrolet Malibu behind the 18-wheeler. For unknown reasons, Jefferson’s Malibu hit the back of the 18-wheeler. Both vehicles then came to a stop in the right lane of I-10.
Despite being properly secured, Jefferson died on the spot. The driver of the 18-wheeler, who was also properly secured, was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries. Toxicology tests are currently being conducted on both drivers and the cause of the crash is still being investigated.
Louisiana State Troopers emphasize making responsible decisions like ensuring everyone in the vehicle is properly restrained, avoiding driving under the influence, and staying focused while driving, individuals can greatly improve their chances of avoiding tragic outcomes.
Troop I has investigated 13 deadly crashes that led to 14 fatalities in 2024.
