Vinton, Louisiana - Law enforcement officials from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office and Vinton Police Department conducted a joint seatbelt checkpoint operation on Highway 90 in Vinton on Saturday, resulting in 19 citations issued to motorists for various violations.
The checkpoint, held at 1717 Highway 90 W. on April 26, allowed deputies to screen 489 vehicles as part of an effort funded by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission to promote roadway safety compliance.
Of the citations issued, the majority were for failure to wear seatbelts, with 11 drivers receiving tickets for this violation. Expired vehicle inspection stickers accounted for six citations, while two additional motorists were cited for having no motor vehicle inspection sticker at all.
The operation represents part of ongoing efforts by local law enforcement to enforce traffic safety regulations in Southwest Louisiana.
Louisiana state law requires all occupants of motor vehicles to be properly restrained, regardless of seating position. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seatbelts reduce the risk of fatal injury for front-seat passenger car occupants by 45 percent.
Local authorities have not announced when the next checkpoint will be conducted, but such operations typically occur periodically throughout the year as part of traffic safety initiatives.
This checkpoint was funded by the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission.
All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
