Calcasieu Parish Ward Six Fire Protection District One Reports Busy Year with Increased Call Volume

Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana – The Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One has released its annual report for 2024, highlighting a year filled with significant activity and commitment from its volunteers. In a community that depends heavily on its emergency services, the district’s report underscores the increasing demands placed on its firefighters and their relentless dedication to public safety.

According to the report, the total number of responses for the year reached 441. This figure includes various types of incidents, reflecting the diverse challenges that the firefighters faced. Among the notable categories of responses, structure fires, including mutual aid and auto aid, accounted for 42 incidents. In addition, the firefighters assisted Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in 90 rescue operations, showcasing their crucial role in saving lives.

Vehicle fires were also prevalent, with 11 incidents reported. Fires occurring in brush, grass, wildland, and outside areas totaled 64, while rubbish fires, including those involving dumpsters, contributed to another 7 incidents. The fire protection district also handled 13 hazardous materials responses, ensuring the safety of the community from potential environmental threats. False alarms were recorded at 27, and other hazardous responses, such as incidents involving arcing wires or downed power lines, numbered 13. The report concluded with 174 responses categorized as “all other responses,” which denotes a variety of situations not specified elsewhere.

In addition to responding to emergencies, firefighters from Ward 6 were proactive in community safety efforts. They installed 59 smoke alarms in residential structures as part of the Operation Save-A-Life program, an initiative supported by the Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal. This program aims to reduce fire-related injuries and fatalities by ensuring homes are equipped with functioning smoke detectors.

The report also highlights the extensive training committed by the firefighters. A total of 4,590 hours were dedicated to training, enhancing the skills and capabilities of the firefighters. This training is vital in preparing them to handle the various emergencies they encounter while serving the community with pride, teamwork, and excellence.
