Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana — The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office (CPSO) is alerting the public to a recent scam targeting families of incarcerated individuals. Sheriff Stitch Guillory warned that scammers are posing as representatives from local bonding companies, deceiving victims into sending money through mobile payment apps with the false promise of securing release for their loved ones.
According to CPSO, the scam involves a caller contacting a family member of someone currently in jail. The caller, pretending to be from a legitimate bonding company, provides a fraudulent local address and phone number to appear credible. The scammer then persuades the victim to transfer more than $500 via a payment application, claiming the money will be used to secure a bond.
However, authorities discovered that the incarcerated individual referenced in the scam did not have a bond set and was still awaiting a court hearing. The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that this fraudulent activity preys on families during vulnerable moments, often catching victims off guard when they are anxious about a loved one’s legal situation.
“These scammers prey on people when they are most vulnerable,” said Sheriff Stitch Guillory. “We urge everyone to double check anything that doesn’t feel right to you. Always verify information through official sources before making payments and be cautious of individuals requesting money through mobile payment platforms. If you are ever unsure, call CPSO directly.”
Mobile payment apps, which allow users to send money instantly from their smartphones, have become increasingly popular. Unfortunately, their convenience can make them attractive tools for scammers. The Sheriff’s Office advises community members to be skeptical of any requests for payment via these platforms, especially if the request comes unexpectedly or from an unfamiliar source.
To avoid falling victim to similar scams, officials recommend the following safety steps:
- Verify Requests: Always confirm details with the jail or official law enforcement agencies before sending any money.
- Use Official Channels: Obtain contact information for bonding companies and sheriff’s offices directly from their official websites or in person.
- Be Cautious with Payment Apps: Treat requests for mobile app payments with suspicion, especially if you are under pressure to act quickly.
- Report Suspected Scams: If you believe you have been targeted or victimized by this scam, contact the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office at 337-491-3605.
The CPSO continues to investigate these incidents and urges residents to stay vigilant. Scams of this nature, which rely on impersonation and emotional manipulation, are unfortunately common but can often be avoided with careful verification.
