Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana – Calcasieu Parish is currently facing a significant surge in floodwater mosquitoes, spurred by high tides and recent heavy rainfall. The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury is alerting residents to the emergence of a large hatch of these pesky insects. To combat this invasion, the CPPJ has mobilized all resources at its disposal, implementing both aerial and ground treatments through its Mosquito Control division.
The primary culprit behind this wave of mosquito activity is the adult salt marsh mosquito, known for its aggressive biting habits both during the day and at night. These mosquitoes are formidable fliers capable of traveling up to 40 miles away from their breeding grounds when aided by favorable winds.
In light of the situation, the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury is urging all citizens to take precautions when venturing outdoors during this mosquito outbreak. Wearing insect repellents is strongly advised to protect against bites and potential health risks associated with mosquito-borne diseases.
