According to the Calcasieu Parish School Board (CPSB), the decision comes amid concerns about black ice forming on local roadways and wind chills dropping into the single digits on Monday morning.
The district emphasized that, while major ice buildup is not expected in Calcasieu Parish, existing wet roads could freeze, creating patches of black ice. Black ice is a thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that forms on pavement, making it especially dangerous for drivers and school buses.
In addition to roadway conditions, CPSB leaders pointed to the impact of very low wind chills on students waiting at bus stops. With wind chill values forecast in the single digits, officials described Monday morning bus stop conditions as “incredibly cold” for students.
The school board stated that closing all schools and facilities is in “the best interest of safety for all students, faculty, and staff.” The closure applies across the district, affecting all CPSB campuses and related facilities.
District officials said they are continuing to monitor the weather closely in coordination with the National Weather Service. An announcement regarding the status of school on Tuesday, Jan. 27, is expected by Monday evening, giving families and staff time to plan for the next day.
No additional changes, such as makeup days or adjustments to the academic calendar, were detailed in the announcement provided by the district.
Parents, students, and employees are encouraged to watch for updates from the Calcasieu Parish School Board through its usual communication channels as the weather situation develops.
