Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Encourages First-time Homebuyers to Attend Homeownership Fair on June 24

Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana – The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury is encouraging first-time homebuyers to attend its Homeownership Fair on June 24.

The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury has announced that they will be hosting the “Building Tomorrow Together” Homeownership Fair for anyone in the area thinking of buying a home. The Homeownership Fair in Calcasieu Parish will be held from 10 a.m.- 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, at the Allen P. August Multipurpose Annex, on 2000 Moeling St., in Lake Charles, Louisiana.

At 10 a.m., the Louisiana Housing Corporation will unveil its Resilience Soft Second Loan Program, which is designed to bridge the affordability gap between the maximum amount that purchasers can afford and the purchase prices of the homes.

It is intended for residents whose annual household income is at or below 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI). Calcasieu Parish’s AMI is dependent on household size and is as follows:

  • One-person household- $42,850
  • Two-person Household- $49,000
  • Three-person household- $55,100
  • Four-person household- $61,200
  • Five-person household- $66,100
  • Six-person household- $71,000

Additional program features include a soft second loan of 20% of the price of the home up to $55,000 for the purchase price and up to $5,000 for closing costs. In addition, if the homebuyer stays in the house for the entire ten-year period, the soft second loan will be forgiven.

“June is the celebration of National Homeownership Month,” said Maxcine Fontenot with the Police Jury’s Housing Counseling Agency. “Potential homebuyers should attend to help them make informed decisions with the homebuying process.”

“Purchasing a home can seem daunting,” said Alyssa Hebert, Human Services supervisor. “The CPPJ Housing Counseling Agency’s team of HUD-certified counselors can assist with budgeting, credit building, and guidance throughout the entire homebuying process.”

Local firms, such as mortgage lenders, insurance agents, and realtors, will also be on hand to answer any inquiries.
