Calcasieu Parish Police Jury Announces Opening of New Open Air Fitness Court at Prien Lake Park in Lake Charles

Lake Charles, Louisiana – The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury celebrated the completion of the new outdoor Fitness Court at Prien Lake Park on Thursday, June 16, 2022, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the park, located at 3700 West Prien Lake Road in Lake Charles.

The new Fitness Court is a 38-foot-by-38-foot open-air wellness area where users can leverage their own body weight – at various angles and levels of resistance – to complete exercises at seven stations. The entire series is only 7 minutes long. Each exercise takes 45 seconds to complete, with a 15-second break in between sets. The combination of these “seven movements in seven minutes” burns more calories per minute than most other forms of exercise.

Users can either follow the instructions displayed at each station or download the free “Fitness Court” app for IOS or Android. The free app is updated on a regular basis with new workouts and challenges to keep users motivated to stay fit.

“This is a great addition to our park system,” said Dean Kelly, Facility Management Director. “We believe it will serve as a fun way to challenge yourself, your friends and your community to get outside and get active.”

“On behalf of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, I’m excited to open this new Fitness Court for our residents to enjoy,” said Anthony Bartie, Police Jury Vice President. “The Police Jury is dedicated to improving the health of Calcasieu residents and are extremely pleased to have this equipment featured at one of our beautiful parks.”

“So, what do you do with a park that has it all? You continue to make it better,” said Dane Bolin, Assistant Parish Administrator. “We want to continue to find ways to get our citizens involved in our parks – and this Fitness Court is just another good example.”

The National Fitness Campaign provided a $30,000 grant to help fund the court’s construction. Currently, there are 100 active fitness courts like this located throughout the United States.
