Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana – Calcasieu Parish residents struggling with utility costs may find relief through a federal assistance program designed to help low-income households manage their energy expenses.
The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury has announced that the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LiHEAP) is currently accepting applications from parish residents who heat their homes with gas or electricity. The program, which assists approximately 6,000 parish residents annually, provides financial support based on total household income.
Priority consideration is given to specific demographic groups, including residents over 60 years of age, households with children under five, and individuals with disabilities. The program operates on a sliding scale, with income eligibility ranging from $29,889 annually for single-person households to $82,771 for families of ten.
The program helps identify and assist eligible citizens who might otherwise face utility disconnection due to financial hardship. The Calcasieu Parish Human Services Department administers the program locally. The initiative receives federal funding through the Louisiana Housing Corporation (LHC).
Residents can apply through multiple channels. Online applications are accepted at the parish’s dedicated portal, while those preferring personal assistance can schedule appointments by calling the Human Services Department. The office also accommodates walk-in clients facing immediate disconnection notices, though wait times should be expected.
