Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana — Recreational boaters in Calcasieu Parish can now return to the Calcasieu River and its West Fork, as well as English Bayou, following the removal of boating restrictions north of the Saltwater Barrier up to the parish line. Parish officials announced the reopening on May 15 after water levels receded to safe levels, ending a closure that had been in effect since May 12 due to severe flooding.

The closure, initially imposed by the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, was a response to heavy rainfall that raised water levels and created hazardous conditions for waterfront properties. Parish authorities reported numerous incidents where boaters’ wakes—waves caused by the movement of boats—entered homes and camps, causing additional property concerns for residents already impacted by flooding.

With the river’s water level now stabilized, all previous restrictions have been lifted. Boat launches at several locations, including Anthony Ferry, English Bayou, Gahagan Lane, and Goodman Road, are once again accessible to the public. Launches at Holbrook, River Bluff, and White Oak parks have also reopened, offering increased access for recreational activities on the water.

Despite the reopening, parish officials continue to urge caution for anyone navigating the waterways. Boaters are reminded to operate at reduced speeds, especially in areas where homes line the banks. Excessive wakes can still cause damage to properties, even after water has receded. Law enforcement will continue to monitor the river and enforce safe boating practices to protect both residents and boaters.

Flooding in Calcasieu Parish was the result of recent, relentless rains that overwhelmed local waterways. The parish’s decision to temporarily close the river was aimed at mitigating further property damage and ensuring public safety. Now, with improved conditions, residents and visitors can safely enjoy the region’s natural resources once again.
