Lake Charles, Louisiana - Southwest Louisiana residents should prepare for an active weather weekend as meteorologists forecast multiple rounds of strong to severe storms beginning late Friday night and continuing through Sunday morning. Calcasieu Parish has been placed under a slight risk for severe weather, rated as a 2 out of 5 on the severity scale.

The National Weather Service expects widespread rainfall totals between 2 and 4 inches across the region, with some localized areas potentially receiving up to 6 inches. These higher rainfall amounts could trigger rapid onset flooding, also known as flash flooding, which occurs when heavy rain falls faster than the ground can absorb it.

All modes of severe weather remain possible throughout the weekend. Damaging winds present the most significant threat, with forecasters assigning a 15% to 29% chance of destructive wind gusts on Saturday. Isolated tornadoes also remain a possibility as storm systems move through the area.

The severe weather threat begins late Friday night and will persist through Sunday morning, when rain is expected to conclude. Residents should monitor local weather reports and have multiple ways to receive warnings, including weather radio alerts and mobile phone notifications.

In addition to the inland weather concerns, coastal areas face separate challenges. A Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect for low-lying areas near the Gulf, while a Small Craft Advisory warns boaters of hazardous conditions on area waterways.

The slight risk designation means scattered severe storms are possible across Calcasieu Parish and surrounding parishes in Southwest Louisiana. While not everyone will experience severe weather, those in affected areas could see damaging conditions.

Residents should plan indoor activities for the weekend and postpone any outdoor events until conditions improve on Sunday.
