Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana - The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office announced that a DWI checkpoint will be conducted at an undisclosed location in Calcasieu Parish on Friday, March 13.
According to the sheriff’s office, the checkpoint will focus on drivers suspected of operating vehicles while under the influence of alcohol and or narcotics.
Officials said sobriety checkpoints have been shown to discourage impaired driving by increasing public awareness and encouraging people to plan ahead before drinking. The agency stated that drivers are more likely to designate a sober driver when they know checkpoints are being conducted.
The checkpoint is being funded through a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, according to the announcement. The Louisiana State Police will also participate.
Authorities did not release the exact location of the checkpoint. Advance public notice of DWI checkpoints is a common law enforcement practice intended to support public safety efforts while informing the community.
The announcement did not include operating hours or additional details about the enforcement plan.
The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State Police routinely take part in traffic safety initiatives aimed at reducing impaired driving and improving roadway safety across the region. In this case, officials said the March 13 checkpoint will specifically target alcohol- and narcotics-related impairment.
