Blizzard Warning Issued for Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas

By Calcasieu Staff

Published January 21, 2025

Lake Charles, Louisiana – A blizzard warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas effective from January 21 at 4:15 AM CST until 12:00 PM CST today. This warning comes as a coastal low pressure system sweeps across the northern Gulf of Mexico, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds to the region.

The inclement weather is characterized by visibility-reducing heavy snow showers and wind gusts exceeding 35 miles per hour. These conditions are expected to persist in bands that move onshore, creating hazardous outdoor environments for those who may be outside for extended periods. Residents in the affected areas are urged to exercise caution and remain indoors whenever possible.

The blizzard conditions are anticipated to result in additional snow accumulations ranging from 2 to 4 inches. Areas particularly impacted include portions of South Central and Southwest Louisiana, as well as southeast Texas. The combination of falling snow and strong winds may lead to visibilities dropping below one-quarter mile. As a result, the roads are likely to become slippery, increasing the risk of incidents. Commuters should prepare for potentially hazardous conditions during both the morning and evening rush hours.

The National Weather Service emphasizes that these severe weather conditions pose a significant risk to those traveling or working outdoors.
