Lake Charles, Louisiana - Starting on September 17, financial crimes detectives from the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office have been receiving reports regarding the misuse of food stamp cards in the Lake Charles region.
In the early stages of the inquiry, it was discovered that EBT cards were being tampered with by skimming devices found at self-service counters in local supermarkets.
As of September 26, CPSO detectives are working on 29 cases, with total reported losses surpassing $14,000. Further investigations have revealed more than 30 similar incidents have transpired in the Oakdale region.
Sheriff Tony Mancuso indicated that they are still in the early stages of these investigations and no arrests have occurred yet. He strongly suggests that if you or your family members receive SNAP EBT benefits, you need to promptly change your PIN. While the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services has informed benefit recipients, not every household has taken the necessary actions to change their PIN. The DCFS advises everyone to frequently check their account either through the LifeInCheck app or by calling the number provided on the back of the card.
Authorities are asking that if you think you have been victimized, reach out to CPSO at (337) 491-3605 or DCFS at (225) 342-3970.
Detective John Melton from CPSO is the primary investigator for these matters.
