Shelter-in-Place Lifted for Parts of Cameron Parish Due to Oil Tank Fire Caused by Lightning

In an update, authorities indicated that the shelter-in-place order has been lifted. Fire crews have extinguished the fire but will remain on the scene to monitor some areas of the tank that are still smoldering.

Cameron Parish, Louisiana – Authorities in Louisiana have issued a shelter-in-place warning for parts of Cameron Parish due to an oil tank fire caused by lightning.

On April 16, 2023, at approximately 1 pm, Louisiana State Police (LSP) announced that a shelter-in-place has been issued for parts of Cameron Parish due to two petroleum crude oil tanks on fire.

The shelter-in-place order was issued for the residents of Hackberry, Louisiana. According to authorities, during the weather event on April 15, two petroleum crude oil tanks located near Sutton Circle were ignited by lighting as the storm passed through the area.

As a precaution, all residents and businesses located within a mile south of Sutton Circle are asked to stay indoors until further notice due to the direction of the smoke plume.

Fire crews were working to extinguish the fire at the time this was published.
