Additional Suspect Arrested in September Prison Escape Case in Louisiana, More Arrests Expected

Louisiana – On October 14, 2022, Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre reported that another person has been apprehended in connection with the investigation into the September 2022 escape of an inmate from the Lafourche Parish Correctional Complex. Jasmina Mahoney, 26, of Tennessee, has been accused of helping Leroy Miles Jr., 23, in his escape from the Correctional Complex. Inmates Bricelon Martin, 26, and Jordan Beltz, 21, had previously been accused of helping in the escape.

Investigators discovered Miles had squeezed through a small drainage outlet after kicking out a metal cover on September 16, 2022. He then scaled the facility’s two outer gates to flee. Miles was apprehended the following morning in a hotel room in Terrebonne Parish. Investigators charged convicts Martin and Beltz with helping the escape in the days following the jailbreak.

Further investigation revealed that Mahoney allegedly planned transportation for Miles following his escape, and they acquired an arrest warrant for her. Authorities in Tennessee apprehended her and handed her to the custody of the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office on October 12, 2022. She was charged with helping escape and was booked into the Correctional Complex. She was subsequently released after posting $10,000 in bail. Everyone else involved is still in detention.

Miles is being held without bail at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center for charges of second-degree murder and aggravated second-degree battery in that parish. He also faces charges of attempted second-degree murder in Terrebonne Parish, as well as simple escape, aggravated flight from an officer, obstruction of Justice, and contempt of court in Lafourche Parish.

Miles’ escape investigation is still ongoing, and additional arrests are still likely because investigators are seeking charges against persons outside the Correctional Complex.

An arrest is an indication that probable cause exists to believe the subject was involved in the offense alleged. A person is innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
