SULPHUR, La. — The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) has announced alternating lane closures on Old Spanish Trail at the intersection of Louisiana Highway 27 in Sulphur, with work scheduled daily from Monday, March 2, 2026, through Friday, March 6, 2026.

According to DOTD, the closures will take place each day from 8 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. and will affect lanes in both directions at the intersection. Traffic will be allowed through the work zone, but only one direction at a time, as crews shift lane access throughout the day.

DOTD officials stated that the lane closures are necessary so crews can perform milling and asphalt operations at the intersection. Milling is a process in which workers grind and remove the top layer of old or damaged pavement. Asphalt operations follow that step, as crews lay and compact new asphalt to create a smoother, safer driving surface.

The agency is warning motorists to expect lengthy delays during the work period. Because Old Spanish Trail and LA 27 are key routes in Sulphur, even partial lane closures are likely to slow traffic significantly, especially during morning and afternoon peak travel times.

The announcement did not include any official detour routes, so drivers who can avoid the area are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra time for trips, or consider alternate local streets where appropriate. Commercial drivers and those commuting through the intersection should be prepared for stop‑and‑go traffic and possible backups.

No additional details were released about the overall project scope beyond the milling and asphalt work at the intersection.

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development is responsible for maintaining and improving state highways, including LA 27 and major corridors through Sulphur and across Calcasieu Parish.
