Sulphur, Louisiana — An inmate at a Sulphur correctional facility died late Monday night after correctional officers reported a medical emergency during their routine rounds, according to information released by the Sulphur Police Department.
Officials said the incident occurred on February 24, just before midnight, when correctional officers noticed that an inmate appeared to be in medical distress. The officers reported the emergency and requested medical assistance.
Acadian Ambulance was notified and responded to the facility. Despite the response, the inmate was later pronounced dead. Authorities said the cause of death is currently unknown.
The identity of the inmate has not been publicly released. Police stated that next of kin have been notified, in keeping with standard procedure when a death occurs in custody.
An autopsy has been ordered, and results are pending.
