SULPHUR, La. — Drivers in Sulphur can expect extended lane closures on U.S. 90 early next year as crews work around the clock on drainage-related improvements tied to a state road overlay project.
The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development has announced continuous, 24-hour right lane closures in both directions of U.S. 90 from Maple Street to North Huntington Street in Sulphur. The closures are scheduled to begin Monday, Jan. 12, 2026, and remain in place through Friday, Feb. 6, 2026.
Transportation officials stated the closures are necessary so crews can perform improvements to catch basins and manholes along the corridor. Catch basins are roadside inlets that collect stormwater and direct it into underground drainage systems, while manholes provide access points for maintenance and inspection of those systems. Both are critical pieces of infrastructure that help prevent roadway flooding and extend the life of the pavement.
The drainage work is part of State Project H.016008.6, described as the U.S. 90 and Louisiana 3256 asphalt overlays. Asphalt overlay projects typically involve placing a new layer of asphalt on top of existing pavement to improve ride quality, address surface wear, and enhance safety. Before that new asphalt layer is installed, agencies often repair or adjust underground features such as manholes and catch basins so they sit at the proper height and do not create bumps, dips, or weak spots in the roadway.
Drivers traveling through the Maple Street to North Huntington Street section of U.S. 90 in Sulphur during the closure period should anticipate slower traffic, possible congestion, and shifting work areas within the right lanes. Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time, stay alert for crews and equipment, and obey all posted signs through the construction zone.
