Sulphur, Louisiana - Authorities in Sulphur say a 1-year-old girl was shot and killed at a residence on Quelqueshue Street on the evening of Jan. 1, 2026, and that the child’s mother has been arrested and charged in connection with her death.
According to the Sulphur Police Department, officers were notified of a shooting at approximately 8:21 p.m. When officers arrived at the home, they learned that a 1-year-old girl had been shot. Police report the child died from her injuries.
Investigators with the Sulphur Police Department determined that the girl was shot and killed by her mother, identified as Kristin Bass. Police did not immediately release further details about what led up to the shooting, the type of weapon involved, or whether anyone else was present in the home at the time.
Bass was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. First-degree murder is the most serious homicide charge under Louisiana law, typically involving an intentional killing under specific circumstances defined by statute. Authorities said Bass’ bond has been set at $10,000,000.
Police have not released the name of the child, and no information has been provided about possible prior calls for service at the residence or any history involving the family.
The investigation remains active. The Sulphur Police Department is asking anyone with additional information about the case to contact Sgt. Cain. Tipsters are encouraged to reach out if they saw or heard anything in the area of Quelqueshue Street around the time of the shooting or have any other information that could assist detectives.
