Lake Charles Bicyclist Dies After Broad Street Hit-And-Run Crash; 20-Year-Old Arrested

Lake Charles, Louisiana - A 64-year-old bicyclist died after a hit-and-run crash involving a car and a bicycle Saturday night in Lake Charles, according to the Lake Charles Police Department.

The incident happened around 8:26 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2025, in the 2100 block of Broad Street. Police said officers were sent to the scene for a reported crash involving a bicyclist and an automobile.

When officers arrived, they found a male bicyclist suffering from multiple broken bones. Officers rendered aid until Acadian Ambulance arrived on scene. The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment, then later transferred to a hospital in Baton Rouge due to the severity of his injuries.

Officers also found parts of the suspect vehicle at the crash site, according to police.

Driver Contacts Police, Then Is Arrested

Investigators said the suspect driver later called the Lake Charles Police Department to report that he had been involved in the crash officers were already working.

Officers spoke with the driver, who was identified as 20-year-old Mathew Alan Vipond of Lake Charles. Following that interaction, Vipond was arrested on the following charges:

  • First-degree vehicular negligent injuring
  • Hit and run driving with death or serious bodily injuring
  • Underage operating vehicle while intoxicated

Police did not release additional details about the vehicle or the timeline between the incident and the driver’s call.

Bicyclist Dies From Injuries

On Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025, Lake Charles Police were notified that the bicyclist had died from the injuries he sustained in the crash.

The victim was identified as 64-year-old Jay Borom.

Ongoing Investigation

The Lake Charles Police Department Traffic Division is continuing to investigate the incident.

Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward.
