New Orleans, Louisiana - A 25-year-old Louisiana man has pleaded guilty to federal drug trafficking and firearms charges stemming from a multi-defendant conspiracy to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine throughout the Tangipahoa Parish region.

Rashun Hutchinson of Ponchatoula entered his guilty plea on September 11, 2025, before United States District Judge Barry Ashe in the Eastern District of Louisiana, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Michael M. Simpson.

Hutchinson pleaded guilty to three specific charges from his indictment. The first count involves conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute controlled substances, violating federal drug laws under Title 21 of the U.S. Code. The second charge relates to possession with intent to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl. The third count involves possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking crimes under federal gun control statutes.

The sentencing guidelines carry severe penalties. For the drug conspiracy and fentanyl possession counts, Hutchinson faces a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison, with the possibility of life imprisonment. These charges also carry potential fines up to $10 million and at least five years of supervised release following incarceration.

The firearm charge adds a consecutive mandatory minimum sentence of five additional years in prison, meaning Hutchinson must serve this time in addition to any sentence for the drug charges. This count carries its own potential life sentence, fines up to $250,000, and up to five years of supervised release. Federal law requires Hutchinson to pay a $100 mandatory special assessment fee for each count.

According to court documents, the drug trafficking conspiracy operated from an unknown start date through at least September 10, 2024. The criminal organization involved Hutchinson and seven other individuals who coordinated their activities through wire and electronic communications to distribute fentanyl and methamphetamine across the Tangipahoa Parish area.

The case represents part of a broader federal initiative targeting high-level drug trafficking organizations. The investigation falls under the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF), a multi-agency program that uses prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven approaches to identify and dismantle major criminal enterprises threatening public safety.

OCDETF operations coordinate federal, state, and local law enforcement resources to target the most significant drug trafficking organizations. This collaborative approach allows agencies to pool resources and expertise when confronting complex criminal networks that often span multiple jurisdictions.

The prosecution also operates under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a comprehensive violence reduction strategy launched by the Department of Justice. PSN brings together law enforcement agencies at all levels with community organizations to address violent crime and gun violence through focused enforcement and community partnerships.

Multiple law enforcement agencies contributed to the investigation's success. The Drug Enforcement Administration led the federal effort, with support from Homeland Security Investigations. Local partnerships included the Hammond Police Department, Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, and Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office.

Assistant United States Attorney Lauren Sarver of the Narcotics Unit is handling the prosecution, bringing specialized expertise in federal drug trafficking cases to ensure appropriate legal proceedings.

Hutchinson's sentencing date has not yet been announced. Federal judges retain discretion in sentencing within statutory guidelines, though mandatory minimum sentences limit judicial flexibility in cases involving substantial drug quantities and firearms.
