Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana - The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office will conduct a DWI (driving while intoxicated) checkpoint at an undisclosed location on Friday, August 22, as part of a nationwide effort to discourage drunk driving. This enforcement initiative is funded through a grant from the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission (LHSC), which receives federal resources from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The campaign, titled “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” represents a partnership between local agencies and NHTSA, designed to prevent crashes and reduce loss of life caused by impaired drivers.

The checkpoint operation will include support from the Louisiana State Police and the Vinton Police Department, strengthening law enforcement coverage and allowing for more effective screening of drivers. By choosing an undisclosed location, law enforcement aims to maximize the element of surprise and promote compliance with sober driving laws across Calcasieu Parish.

Through this campaign, the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office joins a wider, data-driven effort throughout Louisiana to address critical traffic safety issues. The LHSC uses federal grants to support enforcement and education priorities, including programs targeting impaired driving, occupant protection, and services for high-risk areas identified through analysis of crash data. By combining increased law enforcement presence with public awareness campaigns, agencies hope to deter risky behavior and create safer roadways for all residents.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign is part of a broader national and state strategy adopting evidence-based countermeasures to lower incidents of impaired driving. The initiative recognizes that traffic-related fatalities and injuries can be prevented through collaborative enforcement and ongoing education about the dangers of driving under the influence.

Residents and visitors in Calcasieu Parish on August 22 should anticipate possible delays due to checkpoint operations and are encouraged to plan accordingly. Law enforcement urges all drivers to make responsible choices by driving sober, arranging alternative transportation when necessary, and spreading awareness about the risk of impaired driving.
