Breaux Bridge, Louisiana - Louisiana State Police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of 16-year-old Da’Marion Lagrange of Breaux Bridge, who was riding an electric scooter on the night of July 23, 2025, in St. Martin Parish. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Louisiana Highway 347, just south of Jolie Blonde Road.

Authorities say their preliminary investigation shows Lagrange was traveling north in the southbound lane of LA Highway 347 on an electric scooter that lacked lighting. At the same time, a 2015 Chrysler 300, traveling northbound, began passing a slower vehicle by moving into the southbound lane. The Chrysler struck the scooter from behind during its maneuver.

Lagrange, who was not wearing a helmet, sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Troopers reported that the driver of the Chrysler was properly restrained and uninjured. Toxicology samples were collected from both parties as standard procedure; the Chrysler driver voluntarily provided a breath sample, which showed no presence of alcohol, while results from Lagrange’s sample are pending. Police continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.

Louisiana’s Electric Scooter Laws and Safety Requirements

Louisiana legalized the operation of electric scooters on roadways in 2019, but specific safety rules apply. Riders are required to follow the direction of traffic, operate scooters with working brakes and proper lighting after dark, and keep at least one hand on the handlebars at all times. The law also mandates that only one person ride at a time and prohibits scooters from being used for towing or carrying objects that prevent proper control.

With increasing popularity of electric scooters, law enforcement and safety officials urge riders and parents to understand and follow these regulations closely.
