Lake Charles, Louisiana - A Lake Charles man, Derik K. Rayborn, 48, was found guilty as charged on June 19 of second-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping, aggravated cruelty to animals, and possession of a firearm or carrying of a concealed weapon by a person convicted of certain felonies. The conviction follows a violent domestic incident in 2024 that resulted in the deaths of his ex-girlfriend’s son and their dog.
Details of the Incident
Prosecutors detailed that in 2024, Rayborn assaulted his ex-girlfriend at their Lake Charles residence, rendering her unconscious. When she regained consciousness and sought to escape, Rayborn forcibly dragged her back inside and continued his attack. During the altercation, the victim’s son attempted to intervene to protect his mother. Rayborn responded by shooting and killing the son, identified in earlier court records as 26-year-old Eric Bosley.
A dog inside the home, which began barking during the incident, was also killed by Rayborn. The ex-girlfriend managed to escape and seek medical treatment for her serious injuries. Authorities were alerted by hospital staff after she disclosed details of the crime. Deputies with the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office arrived at the residence on Highway 90 East and found both Bosley and the dog deceased from gunshot wounds.
Law Enforcement and Court Proceedings
Rayborn was apprehended by deputies a short time later when he attempted to locate the victim at the hospital. He was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center. Additional charges brought by the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office included attempted second-degree murder, domestic abuse with serious bodily injury, interfering with emergency communication, and illegal use of a weapon during a crime of violence.
District Attorney Stephen Dwight praised the jury for their decision, emphasizing the severity of domestic violence cases and the victim's courage in seeking help. “Her bravery in speaking up and escaping a life-threatening situation is nothing short of heroic,” Dwight stated.
Sentencing for Rayborn is scheduled for August 21 before Judge Lee Hoffoss. The prosecution was led by First Assistant District Attorney Jacob Johnson and Assistant District Attorney Kadence Huber.
