Lake Charles, Louisiana — Louisiana State Police Troop D is investigating a deadly two-vehicle crash that occurred shortly before 2:00 a.m. on May 24, 2025, on Louisiana Highway 14 near Linkswiller Road. The incident resulted in the death of Jacob Hummel, 25, of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and left another driver critically injured.
According to the preliminary investigation by Troop D, Hummel was operating a 2021 Ram pickup truck traveling southbound on Louisiana Highway 14. At the same time, a 2003 Jeep Wrangler was also heading south on the same stretch of road. For reasons still under investigation, Hummel attempted a U-turn. This maneuver placed the Ram directly in the path of the Jeep, resulting in a significant collision. The Jeep struck the driver’s side door of the Ram pickup.
Authorities confirmed that both drivers were properly restrained at the time of the crash. Despite these safety measures, Hummel suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Jeep’s driver, whose name has not been released, also sustained critical injuries and was transported for medical treatment.
As is standard procedure in serious crashes, troopers collected toxicology samples from both individuals. These samples have been submitted for analysis to determine whether impairment was a factor. State Police have not released additional details pending the ongoing investigation into the cause of the incident.
Louisiana State Police urges all motorists to make responsible decisions when operating motor vehicles. They remind drivers to avoid impairment, distraction, and fatigue while on the road.
