Lafourche Parish, Louisiana - Louisiana State Police Troop C is investigating a fatal four-vehicle crash that occurred on the evening of May 7, 2025, on Louisiana Highway 308 near Olivia Drive. The incident resulted in the death of 36-year-old Isaiah Thomas of Thibodaux, Louisiana, and involved multiple vehicles, including a law enforcement pursuit that had ended prior to the crash.
Details of the Incident
According to preliminary reports from Louisiana State Police, the incident began shortly before 9:00 p.m. when a deputy from the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a 2014 Kia Optima. The driver, identified as Isaiah Thomas, was wanted in connection with an ongoing investigation. Thomas reportedly refused to comply with the stop and fled northbound on LA Hwy 308 at a high speed, prompting a pursuit by law enforcement.
The pursuit was discontinued by the deputy shortly afterward, with Thomas continuing northbound on the highway. Authorities clarified that the pursuit had already been terminated when the crash occurred.
Sequence of the Crash
A short time after the pursuit ended, Thomas attempted to pass a northbound 2024 Nissan Frontier in a marked no-passing zone—a section of the roadway where overtaking another vehicle is prohibited for safety reasons. Simultaneously, a 2021 Honda Accord was traveling southbound on LA Hwy 308.
The Kia Optima, driven by Thomas, struck the Honda Accord head-on. After the initial collision, the Kia sideswiped the Nissan Frontier and then a southbound 2023 Ford F-150. The chain reaction left significant damage to the vehicles involved.
Injuries and Investigation
Thomas, who was not wearing a seatbelt, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other drivers involved in the crash were all properly restrained and either sustained minor injuries or were uninjured, according to State Police.
As part of standard procedure in serious crashes, blood samples were collected from Thomas for toxicology analysis, which will help determine if substances such as alcohol or drugs were factors in the incident. The other drivers voluntarily provided breath or blood samples for analysis as well.
Louisiana State Police said that the crash remains under investigation.
Safety and Legal Considerations
Traffic experts note that high-speed driving and attempting to pass in no-passing zones significantly increase the risk of serious crashes. Law enforcement agencies often terminate pursuits if they believe continuing would pose a greater danger to the public.
Officials urge all drivers to obey traffic laws, especially those relating to speed limits and passing restrictions, and to always use seatbelts.
All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
