Meraux, Louisiana — Louisiana State Police Troop B is investigating a fatal three-vehicle crash that occurred late Saturday morning on East Judge Perez Highway near Bartolo Street. The incident, reported around 11:30 a.m. on May 3, 2025, resulted in the death of 91-year-old Rita Owens, a resident of St. Bernard, Louisiana.
According to the preliminary investigation, Owens was driving a 2016 Nissan Versa heading south on E. Judge Perez Highway when her vehicle collided with a 2019 Nissan Versa, which was also traveling southbound. Following this initial impact, Owens’ Nissan veered into the left lane. This lane was closed at the time for ongoing construction work and was marked accordingly.
Owens’ vehicle then struck a Ford F350 that was stationary in the closed lane. Authorities confirmed that Owens was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. She sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where she later died as a result of her injuries.
The driver of the 2019 Nissan Versa, who was properly restrained with a seat belt, was not injured in the crash. Similarly, the occupant of the Ford F350, which was legally stopped in the closed lane due to the construction, was also uninjured.
As is standard procedure in fatal traffic incidents, Louisiana State Police collected toxicology samples from all involved drivers. These samples will be analyzed to determine if impairment contributed to the crash. At this time, no charges have been filed, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Construction zones, often marked by reduced speed limits and closed lanes, require drivers to exercise increased caution. Disregarding these safety measures can lead to dangerous situations, as evidenced by Saturday’s crash.
State authorities emphasize the importance of buckling up every time, regardless of age or seat position, as seat belts remain one of the most effective ways to reduce injuries in a crash. The Louisiana State Police urge all motorists to remain alert, obey posted signage, and always wear seat belts to help prevent future tragedies.
