Slidell, Louisiana - On March 7, 2025, Louisiana State Police Troop L began an investigation into a serious injury crash that occurred on Interstate 59, near the Interstate 12 interchange in St. Tammany Parish. The incident tragically resulted in the death of 26-year-old Destiny Lacoste, a resident of Slidell.
Preliminary findings from the investigation indicate that there were two separate crashes that occurred in close succession at the same location on Interstate 59 northbound. The first crash involved a 2019 Ford F-250, driven by 62-year-old Allen P. Martel of Eunice. Martel's vehicle was traveling in the left lane when it reportedly slowed down and attempted to make an illegal left turn at an interstate crossover. This maneuver is against Louisiana law, which strictly prohibits vehicles from using interstate crossovers except for authorized emergency and law enforcement personnel.
As a result of the Ford's sudden movement, Lacoste, who was driving a 2022 Kia Telluride and was traveling behind Martel, collided with the Ford F-250. The impact caused the Ford to come to rest in the median, while Lacoste's Kia stopped in the left lane of the northbound traffic.
In a tragic turn of events, shortly after the initial crash and before emergency personnel arrived, Lacoste exited her vehicle. While she was outside, another vehicle—a 2018 Ford F-250—was traveling northbound in the left lane and struck the stationary Kia, subsequently hitting Lacoste. The collision resulted in serious injuries for Lacoste, who was transported to a local hospital but ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
A child passenger in Lacoste's vehicle was properly restrained in a child safety seat and sustained only minor injuries. Martel, who was also properly restrained, did not suffer any injuries. The driver and passengers in the second Ford F-250 were properly restrained as well and remained uninjured.
As part of the ongoing investigation, routine toxicology samples have been collected for analysis.
The findings from the investigation will be forwarded to the 22nd Judicial District Court District Attorney's Office for consultation regarding any potential criminal or traffic violations once the investigation is complete.
The Louisiana State Police emphasize the dangers of illegal maneuvers on interstate highways, noting that such actions can lead to severe crashes, injuries, and fatalities.
