Prepare for Freezing Nights Again in Southwest Louisiana: Protect Your Pipes, Pets, and Plants from Freezing Temperatures

By Calcasieu Staff

Published February 17, 2025

Lake Charles, Louisiana - As Southwest Louisiana braces for a new wave of cold temperatures, residents are advised to take precautions to protect exposed pipes, spigots, pets, and plants. The impending cold snap is expected to bring sub-freezing temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday nights, posing a threat to plumbing systems, vegetation, and animals.

Forecasters predict that temperatures away from the immediate coast will dip below freezing for extended periods, particularly during the overnight hours. This situation creates the potential for pipes to freeze, which can lead to significant plumbing issues, including bursts that may cause extensive damage to homes.

To prevent such incidents, homeowners are encouraged to ensure that all exposed pipes and outdoor spigots are properly insulated. Insulation materials, such as foam pipe covers, can help maintain warmer temperatures around the pipes. Additionally, residents are advised to consider allowing faucets to drip slightly during the coldest hours. For the upcoming cold nights, it is recommended to start dripping faucets from approximately 10 PM on Wednesday until 10 AM on Thursday, and again from 9 PM on Thursday until 10 AM on Friday.

In addition to protecting plumbing, homeowners should also take steps to safeguard pets and plants from the harsh conditions. Pets should be brought indoors or provided with adequate shelter to protect them from the cold. Similarly, sensitive plants should either be brought indoors or adequately covered to shield them from frost damage.
