Egan, LA - On February 9, 2025, shortly after midnight, Louisiana State Police Troop I initiated an investigation into a fatal two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 West, near Trumps Road. The incident resulted in the death of 58-year-old Luvenson Sowell, who was a resident of Baton Rouge.
According to preliminary investigations, Sowell was operating a 2007 Honda Accord when he was traveling west on I-10 behind a 2024 Kenworth semi-truck. The semi-truck had come to a stop in the right westbound lane due to traffic congestion stemming from a prior crash. For reasons that continue to be investigated, the Honda failed to stop, resulting in a collision with the rear of the Kenworth's trailer.
At the time of the crash, Sowell was not wearing a seatbelt. As a result of the crash, he suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Kenworth, who was properly restrained, escaped unharmed.
In accordance with standard procedure, toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and submitted for analysis to determine if any substances contributed to the incident. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to uncover the factors that led to this tragic event.
Motorists are reminded to remain alert while driving, and wear a seatbelt to significantly reduce the risk of serious injury or death in the event of a crash.
