Lake Charles, LA – The City of Lake Charles, in collaboration with the Lake Charles Fire Department (LCFD) and the Calcasieu Parish School Board (CPSB), is set to introduce a High School Fire Academy beginning in the fall of 2025. This innovative program, aimed at providing students with essential skills for a career in firefighting, will take place at the College Street Vocational Center and will be paired with a Criminal Justice course.

Mayor Nic Hunter expressed his enthusiasm for the new initiative. "We are always thrilled to announce new partnerships, but this one in particular, I am extremely excited to see coming to fruition," he stated. Mayor Hunter credited LCFD Chief Delton Carter for his efforts in researching similar programs across the state and collaborating with CPSB officials to develop a comprehensive plan for the academy.

The Fire Academy will operate five days a week, with classes on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday dedicated to fire service training, while Tuesday and Thursday will focus on the Criminal Justice component. This schedule aims to provide a well-rounded educational experience for students interested in public safety careers.

CPSB Superintendent Dr. Jason VanMetre commented on the importance of this program, stating, "We are excited to add this incredible opportunity to our already robust course list for high school students. First responders are the backbone of our communities, and we are proud to partner with the City and the Lake Charles Fire Department in this endeavor for our students."

The pilot program is open to all juniors and seniors currently enrolled in a CPSB school. Chief Delton Carter emphasized the significance of the fire service, saying, "The fire service is steeped in a proud tradition focused on the protection of life and property. We stand ready to welcome a new generation of firefighters to answer the call to serve their community." He added that the program will enable high school students to earn their basic firefighter certification, providing them a pathway to a rewarding career.

Students interested in enrolling in this pilot program are encouraged to email [email protected], where a Career Coach will assist them in navigating the scheduling process through their respective schools.

As the High School Fire Academy prepares to launch, it promises to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to pursue successful careers in firefighting and public safety, contributing positively to the Lake Charles community.
