Louisiana - Entergy Louisiana has announced its preparation efforts to restore power as the state braces for potentially historic winter weather. The utility company faces unique challenges posed by extreme cold conditions, including icy roadways and the need for specialized de-icing equipment to safely navigate and restore power lines.

Entergy Louisiana Shared that one significant challenge during these conditions is a phenomenon known as "cold load pickup." This occurs when customers' electric appliances and devices, particularly electric heaters, attempt to start simultaneously after a distribution circuit is re-energized following an extended outage. In this situation, appliances and devices are in a "cold" state, meaning they have not been in use for some time. To prevent damage to both the grid and the appliances, Entergy Louisiana must cautiously bring customers back online.

To address cold load pickup, Entergy Louisiana has adjusted the settings on protective relay devices. These devices are critical for ensuring reliable grid operation, and the adjustments are made in advance of extreme weather events. During the restoration process, teams closely monitor these settings and other equipment to safeguard the grid and ensure a smooth recovery.

Customers can assist in this process by turning off or unplugging electric appliances before power is restored. This action can prevent multiple devices from attempting to restart all at once, which could lead to further complications in the restoration effort.

As Louisiana prepares for the potential impact of severe winter conditions, Entergy Louisiana emphasizes its commitment to the safety of its customers. The utility company has conducted extensive patrols of its systems and implemented additional measures to be ready for any outages that may occur.
