Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana - The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office has submitted a proposal to the Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) under the 2024 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program Local Formula Solicitation. If approved, the grant will provide $61,101 in funding to support the procurement of essential equipment for the sheriff's office.

The proposed grant will cover the costs of a new aircraft computer, a golf cart, simunition training equipment, and a paper shredder. These upgrades aim to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the sheriff's office in serving the community.

The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program was established to support state and local law enforcement agencies in their efforts to reduce crime and improve public safety. The program is named after Edward Byrne, a New York City police officer who was killed in the line of duty in 1988. The JAG program provides funding for a wide range of law enforcement initiatives, including equipment purchases, training programs, and community-based projects.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office is encouraging public input on the grant proposal. Comments and suggestions can be directed to Deputy William Couter at (337) 602-6818. The application for federal assistance under this grant is due by October 22, 2024.
