Sulphur, Louisiana - The City of Sulphur has announced that the Sulphur Fire Department will conduct its annual fire hydrant testing and inspection throughout the month of September. This essential maintenance is crucial to maintaining the Fire Department's Class 2 fire rating and ensuring that hydrants are functioning efficiently for fire protection purposes.

During the testing process, residents may notice discolored tap water, but officials assure that this is not a cause for concern. The discoloration is a result of fire department personnel flushing the city's fire hydrants, which stirs up sediment and materials that settle in the hydrant and pipes. This flushing process cleans out the lines and identifies weak areas in the water system.

Residents are advised to run their tap water until it clears before washing clothes or drinking. In most instances, the water will clear in approximately five minutes. If the discoloration persists, residents should wait an hour and try again.

The annual testing is a vital component of maintaining the city's water system's health. It helps identify areas that require improvement, ensuring that the fire department can respond efficiently in case of an emergency.

While the testing may cause temporary inconvenience, officials stress that it is essential to ensuring the safety of Sulphur's residents and properties. By conducting these tests, the city can maintain its high fire safety standards and provide residents with peace of mind.
