Vinton, Louisiana - A devastating two-vehicle crash on Interstate 10 near Louisiana Highway 109 in Vinton has resulted in the tragic death of 58-year-old Andrew Gonsalves of Kinder, Louisiana. The incident occurred on July 26, 2024, around 8:00 p.m. when Gonsalves' 2000 Lexus ES struck the rear of a 2014 Volvo 18-wheeler traveling eastbound on the highway.

According to the preliminary investigation by Louisiana State Police Troop D, Gonsalves' vehicle veered off the roadway to the right after the collision and crashed into several trees. Unfortunately, Gonsalves, who was not wearing a seatbelt, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the 18-wheeler, who was properly restrained, escaped unharmed.

Toxicology samples were collected from both drivers and are currently being analyzed. The crash remains under investigation, and officials are working to determine the exact cause of the incident.

This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety. Louisiana State Police urge all motorists to make responsible decisions while behind the wheel, avoiding impaired, fatigued, or distracted driving. Additionally, drivers and passengers are reminded to always wear seatbelts, as required by Louisiana law. While not all crashes are survivable, these precautions can significantly reduce the risk of severe injury or death.

This incident marks the ninth fatal crash investigated by Troop D in 2024, resulting in a total of 10 fatalities.
